[Rosegarden-user] ZynAddSubFX as a plugin?

[Firstly, thanks to Silvan for help with my last post :-) ]

I've downloaded ZynAddSubFX as I've seen it used in conjunction with
Rosegarden before, but can't figure out how to get started with it. I
appreciate the documents for it are still being written, but are there any
users of this module out there?

Cheers,
Matt

Hi Marcos,

If I start zynaddsubfx manually then look in rosegarden's 'manage midi
devices' menu, I can see it there as a play device on port 129:0. Then what
do I do with it?!?

Thanks,

Matt

Yes there are: it is an excelent synth.
I had made something with it, you can listen at
"but can't figure out how to get started with it"
You must tell rosegarden that you want to use this synth: so, go to
Composition --> Studio --> Manage Midi Devices
It is not a plugin, it is an external app.
When you finished this settings, just make sure you made the connections
zynaddsubfx ---------------------- alsa_pcm

Hi Marcos,

devices' menu, I can see it there as a play device on port 129:0. Then what

Are you using JACK? I presume so.

* start JACK with QJackCtl
* start ZynAddSubFX
* use QJackCtl to connect ZynAddSubFX to something so you can hear it making
noise (typically "alsa_pcm")

Now you can play Zyn with Rosegarden. You said you saw a play device on
129:0... Well, what you want to do is route a track to play out that device.

Start here and see if you can't take it from there:

http://rosegarden.sourceforge.net/tutorial/en/chapter-5.html#5_2

That ought to get you started, I hope. You can do lots of cool things with
ZynAddSubFX.

Here is a little thingie I did with nothing but ZynAddSubFX and an acoustic
guitar:

Liked your music - great distortion and attention to detail.

I've now got 2 Zyn's working independently on Rosegarden.

Next I'm reading up on how Rosegarden manages its effects busses: I'd like to
apply some reverb etc. to the standard internal GM midi instruments.

I'd also like to make sure I'm using my SBLive's emu10k1 DSP chip as heavily
as possible, to take any strain possible off the PC. I'd be interested to
find out exactly where & how the FX routing and processing is done these
days!

Matt

The best explanation of that is going to be in the Rosegarden Handbook. I
didn't really cover it in my book.

So far as my experience goes, it isn't possible to do anything interesting
with the emu's DSP chip at all.
